SWEET SOUNDS ALERT: "LILA DOWNS" @ EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH AT 4PM...see "LILA DOWNS" at EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO, 1230 Fifth Ave (104th Street) in Manhattan.
Mexican-American singer-songwriter Lila Downs digs into the earthy indigenous culture of Mexico and taps into the deep wells of music traditions across the world, from blues and soul to African root and klezmer. Yet the constant thread winding throughout her aesthetic is the overwhelming, intense outpouring of emotions, perceptible in any language she sings in, whether Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, Mixtec, Nauhatl, Mayan, or Zapotec. Downs performs songs from her newest album set to release early 2012, Pecados y milagros (Sins and Miracles), in which she searches for symbols that give us strength during life’s struggles and pursuits.
Join the museum’s Super Sábado celebration with free exhibitions, art-making workshops, film screenings, and spoken-word recitals.
