On a music hunt the old fashioned way, trekking to the local store to pick up some cd’s (who does that anymore? lol), we stumbled upon Spoon’s new release “Transference”. We never heard of this band—don’t know what type of genre they are classified in or anything (we didn’t go to Virgin Megastore or Best Buy but even then they tend to categorize some artists wrong anyway). At any rate, on a whim we copped the disk and have not been disappointed. We can classify them as alternative rock, soft rock (does that genre still exist), folk music with an edge—the best category is Feel Good Rock & Soul Music! From the first track to the last they tell a story with a heavy bass line, keys and heartfelt vocals.
After doing some googling, we found out more info about this mystery band. The name Spoon was chosen to honor the 1970s German band, Can, whose hit song "Spoon" was the theme song to the movie Das Messer. This indie band was formed in 1993, hailing from Austin, Texas they are far from new—with four releases under their belt they have much more music in store for us and plenty to say! They are comprised of four members: Britt Daniel (guitar, vocals), Jim Eno (drums), Eric Harvey (keyboard, guitar, percussion, backing vocals) and Rob Pope (bass). Over the years, this band has received a number of accolades from THE NEW YORK TIMES, TIME, NEWSWEEK, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY and VANITY FAIR, and wound up on BLENDER and SPIN’s Best of 2005 lists. From their 2007 release, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, they debuted at Number 10 on the BILLBOARD 200 as well as Number 1 on the BILLBOARD Top Independent Albums and was selected by ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE as #10 on their Top 50 Albums of 2007.
