Grape Juice for the Grown

If you know us then you know that the Synch Ladies are wine aficionados - whites, reds, blushes, sake, you name it and we've tried it. But for those times when a buzz after a taste of a grape or rice based wine is not warranted, needed or desired, I highly recommend grape juice. Now I know you are like uh Chante I've had grape juice before but I beg to differ. That sugar induced and heavily mixed with other non grape "juices" that are sold on a shelf and masks itself as grape juice that you have been sipping on since you were a kid is not what I call pure grape juice. Nay I say! Walk with me...

Last week I ordered two bottles of grape juice from a farm in Virginia and will NEVER drink grape juice sold in a grocery store. Period. I copped one white (Seyval Blanc) and the red grape (Chambourcin) juice from Oakencroft Farm, based in Charlottesville, Virginia, and the bottles are now empty! The only thing that comes close to describing the taste is wine (obviously) but sweeter and without the fermentation process of wine grapes go. This grape juice embodies all that is good of a wine b/c the truth of its authenticity is in the science in which the grapes was chosen. Truthfully speaking I was (and still am) thisclose to visiting the farm to see them pick the grapes, refrigerate and bottle it up.

Cinema: "Into the Abyss" - Directed by Werner Herzog

The death penalty is a volatile topic. You have those whom think that capital punishment is a justifiable recourse to solving society's criminal woes while the rest of us (myself included) that think that no one has the right to take another person's life period. The "Into the Abyss" Director and advocate against capital punishment, Werner Herzog, focuses on telling the stories of convicted murders on death row as well the mental effects of execution process with q&a's with prison officers. His approach isn't an effort to sway you to his direction but it was filmed with the intention to make you think about the consequences that capital punishment brings to our society (See Roger Ebert's editorial in the Chicago Sun Times) and the post effects on the prison staff who have endured being a party to each and every execution (since 1976, Texas ranks #1 with 477 executions and Virginia ranks #2 with 109).

EAR CANDY: Dawn Richard "SMFU"

Dawn Richard kicks off 2012 with another single from her forthcoming solo debut, GoldenHeart. Last year, she released a mixtape, "A Tell Tale Heart", then the "December Sky" single from her debut and she recently released another single "SMFU (Save Me From U)".

She has paid her dues as a former member of Danity Kane and Dirty Money. Now, she is breaking out on her own! Some have made the comparison of her vocal style to Brandy which I can see but to me that is such a disservice to both equally talented artists. Dawn his a smooth yet strong delivery that is hers and hers alone. I will admit that she is in the realm of sultry vocalistas whom I admire such as Brandy, Lalah Hathaway, Faith Evans, just to name a few. She is definitely in good company :)

It's an annual ritual for me to celebrate the New Year at home with my family blasting music - very loudly I might add! This year will be no different. After ringing in 2012, I will be tuning into Choice 90.9 FM KTSU for some dope classics spun by Houston-based DJ Soulbrother (aka Christopher Whaley).

I'm not new to his digging-way-down-deep-in-the-crates Jedi skills. A few weeks ago, I checked his late night show and jammed into the wee hours of the morning. This session was a leisurely stroll down memory lane from funk to rock to soul. Chris definitely knows his music!!

If you are not in the middle of a celebration with a few hundred friends, I urge you to tune in this Sunday from 2am-6am CST to join the live stream and have your own euphoric experience in music. What a way to start a new year?!!

The teas that Tiffany, owner of Tea by Tiffany, creates marvels me! I only met her this past summer at the Dekalb Market and I'm a customer-for-life. Her blends are holistic, tasty and refreshing whether enjoyed in warm or cold weather. Her chocolate tea is downright sinful!

Tiffany is a tea-scientist as she continuously experiments with new combinations. And well versed in her craft and passes on interesting tidbits of wisdom to her customers each time you partake in her blends.

I am an avid tea-lover but I have admit I consider myself a novice to this beverage genre. On occasion, I would indulge in ginger root, green tea, rooibus and earl grey, just to name a few. So when Tiffany sent us an invite to attend last night's exclusive tea soirée, attending was a must!

The soirée was held at a top secret location with an elegant display featuring a royal tea set, endless appetizers and a special punch based with one of her special tea blends infused with vodka (reminiscent of sorrel).

As everyone mixed and mingled throughout the night, Tiffany brought out three of her many tea blends, one that I found quite interesting was a coconut blend that helps with your digestive system that was absolutely delicious. She also schooled us on the proper way to brew your tea - yup I took notes! lol

In 2012, she will be offering these soirées on a regular basis and her teas will be featured at special events throughout the NYC-area so be sure link up with her on her website or twitter for up to date info on future events.

I must admit I honestly planned on cutting back (just a little) on my sweets intake for the holidays but when Dexter Myers is coming to town with his infamous cookies plans definitely had to be changed!

First and foremost, Dexter is widely known as an international vocalist but what many don't know is that he is a vibrant entrepreneur that inspires many including the Synch Ladies to follow your passion. His venture is in the world of baking and with an evergrowing reputation as the "cookie guy" he entices your palate with several cookie creations ranging from the traditional oatmeal raisin rockstar (my absolute favorite!) to the exotic chocolate caramel. Everything is worth a try-at least once!!

He has so many plans in the store for 2012 including two new cookie lines to be launched. We are incredibly excited for him! You go Dex!! This is a great way to cap off the holiday in music with no one other than Russell Taylor. The Synch ladies cannot get enough of Brother RT! To know him is to love him. We're fans from the beginning with his debut "Somewhere in Between" (2006) to his sophomore release "Confessional" (2009) and we constantly long for more.

When he posted his rendition of the holiday classic "Christmas Time Is Here" we simply had to listen and download. Enjoy!

This video is from her 2010 debut release 'Floetic Soul'. I have to admit that I'm a proud member of Team Floetry...I was slow to love these ladies venturing solo and, was luke warm to Marsha's debut as well as Natalie's debut. But you simply cannot deny their independent artistic charisma. They are astounding and phenomenally amazing both together and a part!

These faeries are not your typical supernatural ladies of folklore. This duo are the lovely ladies - Jean Grae ("Cookies and Comas" Mixtape) and Mela Machinko (backup singer for J Dilla/Talib Kweli). Both artists are amazing in their own right and you are definitely in for a real treat with their collab project, Hellpit Faeries presents 'Jingle Fucking Bells Christmas EP'.

The first hot single "Its the Most Fucking Wonderful Time" really sets off this release along with a dope video to boot featuring surprise guests (name drop: James Earl Jones...I kid you not!). As many across the world open their gifts in joyful tidings shared with family featuring treasures of the electronic persuasion, fruity scented candles, sexy flannel-wear, just to name a few, I was pleased to open my inbox this morning to new ear candy...the first music goodie is by the artist known simply as Tess.

For those that don't know Tess (shame on you!), she fuses Hip Hop, Rock and Soul to bring to the masses what she calls 'Hip Rock & B' - we love her diversity! She's performed like crazy in NYC (including the Apollo Cafe earlier this year) and abroad alongside Musiq Soulchild, JT Taylor (of Kool & the Gang) and more. While she is working on her new project that will drop in 2012, for the holidays, she gave us something special to sweat to as we work off that sweet potato pie, collards, gumbo, turkey, chicken, stuffing.....etc ;)

Coming to a Theater Near You: "THE HOBBIT"

I am INCREDIBLY geeked and highly pissed at Peter Jackson for making fans wait a whole year until his new film - "The Hobbit" is released!

This film is a prequel to Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. In the Hobbit, fans are introduced to the legend, that is, Bilbo Baggins, the ring's captor that kicks off the later trilogy series. It tells the adventure of Baggins' adventure to reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the dragon Smaug. I predict epic battle scenes!! LOL This film is one of two prequel films - the second one entitled "Hobbit: There & Back Again" will be released in 2013.

Baggins, who is played by Martin Freeman ("The Office"), is joined by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), Oakenshield's band of Dwarf warriors, and Gandalf the Grey (Sir Ian McKellan). Andy Serkis returns as Gollum. Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, and Cate Blanchett return in small parts to reprise their roles as Legolas, Frodo, and Galadriel, respectively. Evangeline Lilly will play Tauriel, while Luke Evans is on board as Bard.

If you follow SR on twitter, you know from my tweets that I'm a diehard LOTR fan - I cannot count the number of times that I've watched the entire trilogy...including the extended versions. I'm stoked about this film!! This is going to be a long wait but it will be well worth it!!

EAR CANDY: Steph LdaVoski "Closer to My Dreams"

I came across Brooklyn Hip Hop artist, Steph LdaVoski (aka Steph L.V.) on the Twitterverse. He recently posted a new vid "Closer to My Dreams", his remake of Goapele's famous smash...Bk style, of course ;) I'm definitely feeling his verses on this - inspiration, never giving up on his dream to the artist that he is meant to be in this industry.

The verses that he drops on this classic is typical of Steph's flow. For over four years, this Flatbush native's style has evolved reflecting a smooth, natural and humble personality capturing the hearts of listeners. Steph L.V. defines the term "Going Hard" very well, his passion for music and his pure love for hip hop is what keeps him in a dedicated momentum that will push him to the next level. His debut release entitled 'High Frequency' is scheduled to drop in the Spring of 2012 (April to be exact). Looking forward to more words of inspiration from Steph!!

EAR CANDY: Caprice Starbrite "NO MORE"

Last week Tuesday, just in time for the holidays, Caprice Starbrite gave us a itty bitty taste from her Spring 2012 debut release with the single "No More".

Caprice is no stranger to the music industry! Influenced by the greats such as Teena Maria, Michael Jackson, EWF and Phyllis Hyman, she honed her vocal skills and has been harmonizing as a background singer for over a decade. She has shared the stage with incredible artists including ZoZo Afrobeat, Dexter Myers, Coby Koehl, MiKA and countless others. Not only is she an amazing vocal talent, she is a professional dancer, a graphic artist and an entrepreneur as co-founder of Synchronized Rhythm (one half of the Synch Ladies duo!).

Since we crossed paths a few years back and seeing her perform along side some bad artists that I've come to admire (...and not just for their raisin oatmeal cookies..ha! *sideye at Dexter*), I knew this day would come. The day when she would take that brave step onto the stage not as a backup singer or a hostess at one our Synch Rhythm shows but as a solo artist gracing the world with her voice, her lyrics, her unique sound.

I don't like to confine artists into a music category - that, to me, confines their artistry when music is by definition boundless. So I think that what Caprice offers is something different and refreshing to the musically inclined. With "No More", you hear her rock fused with soul and funk influences. And that is what you can expect from her forthcoming release.

So for now...sit back and enjoy then press replay!

We were introduced to Antonique Smith from her role as Faith in film 'Notorious', a biopic of the life of Brooklyn hip hop artist, Biggie Smalls. What many did not know about Antonique was that she's not only an actress on film and had a starring role in the Broadway play, Rent, but she's also a vocalist. She did a powerful rendition of Adele's "Someone Like You" - it gave me instant chills!!

India Benet has ear candy in the making with her amazing vocals and musicianship. Beautiful sounds definitely run in the Benet family. Her father is crooner, Eric Benet. We haven't heard much about India from Eric other than she's a great daughter and that is something we can but respect. She had a chance to grow up as a normal kid, transition into a teenager like the rest of us and morphed into a beautiful young lady with a voice of an angel.

We honestly don't know if she will pursue a career in music (that's her call, of course) but if she does she has a couple of fans in us...check out her rendition of "Almost Lover" by A Fine Frenzy.

Fleas for the Holidays..Shopping!

Flea markets for me are the best ways to get exposed to local small businesses as well as uncover some cool finds as gifts for others (or yourself). I blogged this past summer about the Dekalb Market and checked it out today for some much needed holiday shopping (and noshing, of course). And what I loooove about NYC is that the Dekalb Market is one of many flea markets within the city limits allowing all entrepreneurs from the seasonal to store-front-less business owner to expand their followers and appease their fans at different locations throughout the city.

Here are a few tips from an experienced flea market shopper:

Join the flea market's mailing list to stay on top of the schedule b/c not all flea markets run year round and seven days a week (they need a vacation too...lol)
Bring plenty of change - not all vendors at the markets will have credit card machines and some cringe when you give them twenties. I'm often inundated with a multitude of thank you's from the vendors that I shop from when I give them exact change and throw in a few singles - that's my good deed for the year..ha!
Bring a big empty cloth bag with you to put all of your purchases in. If you don't, you risk holding a half a dozen bags of varying sizes plus its good for the environment to consolidate and conserve waste (this is my other good deed).

Sweet Confessional: Dylans Candy Bar

I normally don't blog about my sweet adventures. It's one of those not-so-secret hard to break away from habits. If you know me, sweets are my kypronite.

For a friend's birthday and out of curiosity, we stopped by Dylan's Candy Bar in Midtown (East Side). The hyped crowd was warranted. This place is three floors of ohhhmmmmgeee!

The first level will put you into sweet shock stage one with its chocolate fountain and island of treats from gummi bears to chocolate covered sunflower seeds. The basement will give you that next high with oversized candy bars, endless fudge and more. Then comes the ultimate high...the top floor. You have the cakes bar with cupcakes that will make Crumbs a bit jealous. Then you have the ice cream and sandwich bar (build your own sweet fantasy!). Lastly is the cocktail bar...this is where I fell in love with Godiva liqueur in DCB's mocha peppermint cocktail while watching Snoopy for DCB's movie night as fresh popcorn was being served up.

I definitely will be back to satisfy my sweet fix...and to try the pumpkin spice cocktail ;)

ART EXHIBIT: 19th Annual CanStruction

Yesterday, I checked out the 19th Annual NYC CanStruction Competition Exhibition at the World Financial Center. This was my first time actually seeing the amazing work that the teams from various organizations and businesses put together. Each work of art was made up of...cans, of course. Very crafty! I loved the converse replica (pictured below) - one of my favs! The show runs through November 21st for public viewing. Let us know which one is your fav!!

After the exhibition run, the cans will be donated to City Harvest.

In one word....Incredible! I checked out the annual NYC Marathon last weekend with a few thousand friends ;) I copped my spot early Sunday morning in Park Slope, Brooklyn. During the race, it was extremely hard for me to focus on snapping shots because I was incredibly excited to witness this for the first time especially as the runners were whizzing by.

There were a few poignant moments when some of the runners looked like they were losing their steam. But me, along with the crowd, roared in cheer Bk-style in hopes of giving them that extra needed boost that was way more powerful than any energy drink could give. We knew this race was hard for even the most experienced runner to go the entire distance. This experience was one that will live within me for a long while--well until next year when I attend again. I'm telling you....the passion that these runners exuded invigorated me that day.

Congrats to all the runners!! U Rawked!!!

Peaceful Journey....Heavy D

Yesterday, we lost a great mind and artist, Dwight "Heavy D" Arrington Myers.

I didn't know him more than a celebrity headline on projects that he's worked on, the bars that he versed ever so cleverly, the suave moves he made on the dance floor and the other random life ups and downs that were shared publicly. The man that I knew was simply Heavy D ever since I was a teen.

Back in the 90's, his music (with his Boyz) introduced me to a fresh hip hop sound and showed me that big dudes got style. He showed me that you can dabble simultaneously into acting, producing, etc. in the entertainment industry but not lose your focus on your true passion...which for him was music. He was a true example of how to live a quality life out of the negative spotlight and be genuinely loved by so many. He was inspirational to all who crossed his path - for me, it was on Twitter - dishing tweets of encouragement and a bit of knowledge in between the social media banter.

No doubt, his words, action and life will be cherished for years to come. My prayers go out to the family that knew both sides of this soul - Dwight the family man and Heavy D the overweight lover.

If you have not copped his September release "Love Opus" please do so in his memory...like his other projects this one was close to his heart. In hindsight, this project takes on a more profound meaning as it was his last release doing what he did best...move the crowd in love.

Artist Spotlight: MARIKO

Last night, I crossed paths with Mariko at the 125th train station on Lexington Avenue as she belted out a selection by Alicia Keys on my way home. This pint sized beauty hit notes with such fervor while gently strumming her guitar - I only wished I was quick enough to have captured this on video. But I digress. Luckily, I was able to grab a flier with her info as made her way down the platform giving commuters a dose of some much needed (and well deserved) delectable ear candy at 10pm - in the midst of the MTA late night shenanigans.

Hailing from Japan and raised in Boston, Mariko has paid some serious dues. She honed her songwriting prowess while in high school. Later, she came to New York where she sharpened her skills at band battles and open mics in various venues across the city as well as shared the stage with notable artists like Pitbull, Spike Hill, Harpers Ferry and countless others.

With a new recent EP release entitled "On With the Show" soon to be released this Fall, a slew of shows under her belt and more to come, and impromptu performances as I saw last night, its safe to say that Mariko is already well on her way to realizing her dream as a successful vocalist, musician and songwriter.

She is performing tonight at Angels and Kings (500 E 11th Street) at 9:15pm! If you are in the area definitely stop by!

EAR CANDY: Candice Anitra "Take Me"

Sometimes your music library surprises you when you hit *shuffle*. That's what happened to me the other day while zoning out which is a requirement after a long day/week/month (...you get the point). When "Take Me" by Candice Anitra pops up and I'm floored. I TOTALLY forgot that this gem was hidden in my library. If you know me, you know that I have this crazy obsession about music - not an an artist but an a connoisseur of many ear candy flavors!

Candice owns this song - although her pauses, climaxes and overall artistic prowess on this does remind me of MeShell Ndegeocello (who Caprice and I have had the distinct pleasure of seeing perform at Weeksville this past summer).

NYC Malaysian Noodle Festival

Malaysia Kitchen caused a serious traffic jam today in Chelsea with its Noodle Festival featuring eight local restaurants giving foodie lovers a sampling of the best of Malay cuisine that New York City offers.

With a tight lunch hour schedule, I was only able to try the Curry Mee from the New Malaysia Restaurant. It's a yummy dish - noodles in curry spicy both, fish balls and tofu. Delicious is not the word to describe this! I really wanted to try it all but time was ticking and the crowd was not on my side (the line to Fatty Crab was insanely long)! From afar, this tiny island was an oasis to food-obsessed New Yorkers everywhere that made even the most resistant passerby stop and take notice then eventually convince without hesitation to join the rest of us in the "line dance".

It was truly an amazing turnout - I hope this will convince Malaysia Kitchen to do this random act of foodie goodness in other areas in the city more often!

This year's Brooklyn Book Festival was truly amazing! The biggest book fest that I've ever seen. The author readings, events for the youth, spoken word sessions, lectures, chats with authors covered the municipal court park in downtown Brooklyn and overflowed into the nearby venues (e.g., Brooklyn Historical Society). The crowd was huge - filled with lovers of the literary arts, poets and authors!

I had a great opportunity to pick up some new titles (seven to be exact - I would've bought more but my bag was full....ha!), chat with writers about their creative process and network with publishers (writers, check out Color Page publishers!).

A special shout out to the authors that I support and you should too - J-Elijah (author of "I Got the Revelation..."), Sandra Lakeland (author of "Six Feet From the Ledge"), Grace F Edwards (author os "The Blind Alley"), Wayne Small (author of "The Pumpkin that Hated Halloween"), Eric Watts (author of "Cellar Door Volume I: Secrets") and Odi Mumba Kwamdela (author of "Soul in the Wilderness")!!

This past Monday, the music industry lost a musical icon, NICK ASHFORD, who's contributions were seemingly endless. The world knew him as one half of the powerful songwriting duo, ASHFORD & SIMPSON, who wrote the most unforgettable songs for notable artists (e.g., Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, just to name a few); while saving a few gems for themselves - including SR's Chante favorite love anthem "Solid" showing that their love, and the power of love is stronger than anything on the planet; as well as SR's Caprice favorite, "Is It Still Good To You" which brings about the wonder if that feeling that was felt so strongly once is still good.

Violence is an American disease and programs like Ceasefire offers a holistic panacea with vigilance!

The film, The Interrupters, takes place in the heart of the midwest, Chicago, IL, where crime has taken so many young lives without an end in sight. With communities paralyzed with hopelessness, the Ceasefire model, first implemented in Boston back in 1996, was the shining ray of hope that Chicago needed.

The film focused on the day-to-day impact that the driving force of the program, the Interrupters, have on the members of the community and the violent instigators. The Interrupters are instrumental vehicles for diffusing situations that can escalate to someone's death, cyclical violence, or worse turning a would-be successful youth into a a future gang member ready and willing to take a life.

The crux of this film is to show the hearts and souls of these Interrupters who put their lives at risk each and every day. The film also shows that these youths and adults that have been written off as being too bad to be saved are truly the ones that need a second chance to make a change into the right direction.

This film touched my heart. I know that violence happens everywhere. I live in a city where it happens so much that I've become desensitized and detached to any news of violence. But this film really put me face-to-face with the victims filled with either rage or disbelief that they survived, the families that weep at funerals asking why knowing that a solution is not within reach and a community reeling from yet another shooting with pleads wondering when will it end.

The Ceasefire model brings a long awaited warmth of a sunrise after a long, dark cold night. It gives promise to a day when we can potentially see a time when the high frequency of violence in our inner cities as a distant memory for the history books.

A Harlem Stop @ the Studio Museum

After indulging her sweet tooth with a few cupcakes at Tonnie’s Minis on Lenox Ave, SR’s Chante headed to the Studio Museum on 125TH Street to indulge her cultural side.

She stepped into the vestibule and into another world. The Studio Museum is as posh as any other gallery that comes to mind especially coming from its humble beginnings at their original location in a Fifth Avenue loft since 1968. Before opening the grand double doors to the gallery area, there was “Harlem Postcards” exhibition that showcased snapshots of the historic neighborhood and served as an appetizer of what was to come in the museum’s gallery.

The current exhibitions through October 2011 are “Spiral: Perspectives on African-American Art Collective”, “Evidence of Accumulation: Artists in Residence 2010-2011”, Lyle Ashton Harris’ “Self/Portrait”, “As it is As it could be: Expanding the Walls 2011”, “StudioSound” by Kamau Amu Patton and, of course the “Harlem Postcards”.

Each exhibition renders you speechless and will make you two-step backward to see it once more as you grapple with the not-so-obvious meaning. For instance, in the Evidence of Accumulation exhibition, Simone Leigh’s large cowrie shells sculpture symbolizing more than just the ornamental essence of these shells but their economic value as it was the original intent of these shells in African and Asian societies.

"Freedom Now" - Reginald Gammon

The two exhibits that were amazing above all to SR’s Chante were the “Spiral…” and the “Expanding Walls”. The first exhibit that you encounter once you cross the double doors threshold is “Spiral…” It has such an impact with the few pieces showcased – it is something to see! The Spiral exhibit presents works by members of the historic Spiral group, which was a New York–based collective of African-American artists that came together in the 1960s to discuss their relationship to the civil rights movement and the shifting landscape of American art, culture and politics. The group included artists Charles Alston, Emma Amos, Romare Bearden, Calvin Douglass, Perry Ferguson, Reginald Gammon, Felrath Hines, Alvin Hollingsworth, Norman Lewis, Earl Miller, William Majors, Richard Mayhew, Merton D. Simpson, Hale Woodruff and James Yeargans. This exhibition brings together iconic figurative and abstract paintings, many of which are in the Museum’s permanent collection, by ten of the original fifteen members. This exhibit is not just aesthetically pleasing but it is visual history before your very eyes.

The second favorite exhibit at the Studio Museum was the “Expanding Walls”, which is an annual exhibition featuring the work of high school participants in the Expanding the Walls: Making Connections to Photography, History and Community program. The work by student photographers are also being displayed along with work by quintessential Harlem photographer James VanDerZee, whose work they have studied. The approach that James VanDerZee took with his work that was featured and how the students used it as a source of inspiration but captured their subjects in their own unique way was inspirational! SR’s Chante was completely invigorated by this exhibit as a budding photographer herself.

The Studio Museum is a must-see! Be sure to stop by for the current exhibitions as well as for their special events and the Target Free Sundays throughout the year!

FILM in REVIEW: A Year in 9th Wonder

This review is in the words of SR’s Chante…

“The Wonder Year” documentary about the legendary DJ/Producer Patrick Douthit bka 9th Wonder was an eye-opening experience. To this day, the only thing I knew about 9th was seeing his name in the liner notes of CD covers of artists that he’s worked with or when Jay-Z dropped his name in a song that they’ve collaborated on. I never knew that he was one third of Little Brother (along with Phonte from The Foreign Exchange), that he has taught the history of hip-hop at distinguished colleges like Duke University and many others or that he was such a influential part of hip-hop history. Who knew?

This documentary, filmed by Kenneth Price, started out as 9th helping Price complete his thesis project and it ended up being something more – many great things are! Price’s approach was capture the essence of the private man that made everyone curious with twelve months. 9th is known for making killer beats out of music that many have overlooked taking minuscule parts of a song and within minutes create something magical- How does he do that?! He’s a family man who sets aside quality time with his kids to not miss the special moments while collaborating with so many artists – How does he do that?! His students hang onto his every word as he goes through the history of hip hop from the 60’s to 1997 (the year of the Notorious B.I.G’s death) – How does he do that?! He just does because he’s 9th!

The film opens up with 9th in the midst of a lesson with his students. He literally dug in the crate, pulled out a record that he has never seen then spins it and within five minutes (or less) he found a sample, looped it and created something that made you say “dammnnn”. This is was great way to kick of this film – to enter his creative process was genius. Some people might say that he’s giving away his secrets but it’s not b/c it gives you an inner perspective on how badass this man is when it comes to his craft. He breathes music, he exudes music and he inspires many to be progressive in creating their own music.

Over the 12 months, the film delves into 9th’s persona. What is the chemical make up of this man – he’s not a robot that churns out memorable beats, he has many sides. When he’s home with his family and visiting his hometown Winston-Salem, NC, he’s simply Patrick. Patrick, since he was a kid, was entranced by music of all genres, along the way he picked up instruments (like the clarinet), joined band and made his first beat in 1998. When he’s with his students and colleagues in academia, he is Professor 9th giving his students an invaluable dose of his wisdom about hip-hop, creating your own sound with samples that keep the music of our past alive and understanding that learning about a culture that you love is a growth in your “knowledge about self”. When he’s amongst his peers, he’s 9th Wonder, a Grammy Award winning producer who has worked with great artists like Jay Z, Beyonce, Erykah Badu, Mary J Blige, Mos Def, Drake, De La Soul and the list goes on and has created over 300 different sounds.

The ActNow Foundation hosted this amazing film and the screening was held last night at the BAM Cinema. I hope that more indie film theaters in NYC will add “The Wonder Years” to their roster of shows – it’s definitely a must see!!!

On her way to get some (more) grub at a nearby Thai spot in Cobble Hill, SR's Chante heard the jazz band going strong nearby at Brooklyn's Metrotech Center - at first she thought she missed her chance to see Jose James perform for the first time luckily she stopped by just in time to see him perform the hell out of "Georgia". He killed that joint! It was incredible to see so many people at this outdoor fest - young and old - taking in his velvet voice backed by an amazing band!! ((It was a bit plus seeing Pamela Nichols, one half of One Nation Under a Soul Shack enjoying the show!))

Shopping Til You Drop @ DEKALB MARKET (Bklyn)

Last week the Dekalb Market opened its "doors" in Brooklyn (located where Albee Square Mall used to be). This cool shopping and eatery mecca is what downtown Brooklyn needs! Its unique in scale where each vendor has its own crate unit that they've revamped and decorated with their special touches creating a cosy mini store. As a shopper, you can find any and everything from hang bags, jewels, tees and fashionista couture. As a foodie, you can nosh on donuts, organic teas, salads, chicken/beef sandwiches and cupcakes. And as a music buff, the vinyl is spun all day long by the DJ at the BBox Radio Station (on the market's kick off day DJ Spinna and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have spun a set here) as you lounge in the tent's shade and cool breeze. Lastly you can find the miscellaneous/strange/oddities including artwork featuring little cartoon creatures to add to your wall's diverse motif by Kudulah.

SR's Chante sipped on Moroccan mint iced tea courtesy of Tea by Tiffany which was DELISH, picked up a Brooklyn tote designed by Brooklyn Rock and got a cute skirt/dress at Harriets by Hekima.

Needless to say the Synch Ladies will make another return to do more shopping since there are more vendors to come!

SR’s Chante checked the “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest” documentary and shares her thoughts about the film…

I finally had an opportunity to check the documentary chronicling the trials, tribulations, successes and milestones of A Tribe Called Quest (ATCQ) as well as marking a very pinnacle moment in hip hop history.

This film was a stroll down memory lane for me. I grew up in Brooklyn and was literally surrounded by hip-hop. If you grew up in my hood not liking or knowing anything about hip hop, you lived under a rock - how could you not know about DJ Red Alert, Afrika Bambaataa, The Furious Five, Run DMC, Kurtis Blow and the list goes on. Hip Hop during the beginnings of me (late 70’s, 80’s and 90’s) soured through my veins along with other musical influences. It all intertwined!

The film showed me the true reason why I loved listening and dancing to the Jungle Brothers, Moni Love, De La Soul and, of course, ATCQ. They brought, as they call it, a “conscious party” vibe to hip hop using all aspects of music from crazy percussion sequences, break beats that were sick and loops that made you pause to try to decipher what way-back-when-song did they sample that from – and then there times that I found out that it was the artist’s instrumentation that made many beat hooks that were eventually looped. I’m not going to admit that I’m an expert of hip hop but I respected the genre and the culture that evolved from it

The film sought to not only tell the story of these four friends who met, had a gift and shared it with the world, but it also told the story of what hip hop once was. It showed us who were the pioneers that paved the way for hip hop artists and DJ’s of today who think outside the industry box aiming to achieve a higher level of consciousness in their music like The Roots, The Neptunes, Ja Dilla (RIP), Common and so forth. During the entire movie, I was cheesin’ from ear to ear because it was so nostalgic and it gave me a clearer understanding of the history that was made during my formative years. I remember the block parties where dudes dug in the crates, spun the oldies but goodies and created classic new sounds. I remember the good ole days when most artists created feel-good music instead of using their platform to continue unnecessary beefs. I remember those good times and ATCQ was a critical part of that. What they spoke about, their synchronized movements and their wardrobe was nothing less than legendary. Their energy was invincible on wax and on stage! The only way to destroy that synergy was from within.

The film did address the question of why did ATCQ disband. I personally never knew why it happened. A lot of groups back in the 90’s came together and broke up. That was the nature of the industry beast, I suppose, but the film delved in a bit deeper than that on ATCQ’s breakup. The tension of internal beefs as well as the motivation by members to pursue other life dreams caused the group to eventually implode. For ATCQ to end on such a tragic note was heartbreaking but it was inevitable – you can’t fight fate! Perhaps the union of the members was meant to break because each of these men had to listen to their own inner voice to follow their vision whether its perfecting their culinary skills, fighting their demons for the preservation of life or having a continual impact on all music genres through creative expression. Whatever the reason, I am incredibly thankful to have been a part of a generation that witnessed the historic birth of ATCQ, hip-hop’s pioneers of the native tongue movement.

We were intro'd to JEANNE JOLLY on The Foreign Exchange's latest project. After ~~stalking~~ googling Jeanne, we can't get enough of her voice. We hate to put genre labels on artists but the only way to describe her sound is a mix of blues-folk-soul.

Muhsinah – Gone

We had the pleasure of seeing Muhsinah perform two weeks ago at the Weeksville Garden Party and she recently released her new project “Gone” which is two EPs in one – Urban and Suburban. Released on her 28th birthday, this project is simply profound! In her own words she describes “Gone” as taking “three song ideas and interpret them based on my early experiences in D.C. and VA”. Saidah Baba Talibah is FIERCE personified! She is electric! Her music makes you wanna let whatever lies within you out! Her sound is reminiscent of the funk, rock divas of the past and present - she definitely is the future! Born and raised in Canada, Saidah’s music has been greatly influenced by Toronto’s musical and ethnic enclaves. She first created stories that reflect the multitude of sounds and styles emanating from the city as a founding member of the seminal soul/rock group Blaxam and was prominently featured on their 1998 EP, Kiss My Afro.

Since her early days studying dance, visual arts and music, Saidah shaped her eclectic style based on her persona. What she brings to the stage reflects her ambitious and confident approach to life. She gives us her brand of rock soul that makes you stand up and take notice. The best way to describe her sound is “Living Color-meets-Erykah Badu” (to us that is as close as you can get!).

On August 2nd, her new project “(S)Cream” is set to be released to the masses ready to be consumed! Meshell Ndegeocello + Muhsinah @ Weeksville (Bklyn)

Over 300 or more DEEP people came to the historic Weeksville Heritage Center in Crown Heights, Brooklyn to see the dynamic Muhsinah and incomparable Me'Shell Ndegeocello perform! The Synch Ladies were in the house to enjoy this summer concert as part of Weeksville’s month-long Garden Party concert series.

It was a celebration of beauty from the darkest chocolate brown to the lightest hue. It definitely was a jumping party with dance circles sprouting everywhere as people jammed to the music mixed by the infamous DJ Manchildblack. The crowd was surrounded by food vendors who were dishing up yummy light treats to keep the energy going (the sorrel lemonade was so cool and refreshing).

First up, Muhsinah stepped to the stage bringing us classics from her own creative vault as well as something new from her upcoming release later this summer. This DC honey worked the crowd of fans and newcomers with delight. Prancing, dancing and playing the heck out of her keyboard! When the sound system went screwy, she improvised as any professional would and gave us an awesome show.

Before Me’Shell came to the stage, she was introduced by a vet of the music business and a talented musician in his own right, Mr. Vernon Reid of the hard rock band, “Living Colour.” (this is where SR’s Caprice almost lost her mind-LOL) As the crowd listened patiently as Vernon explained a long story of true artistry, Me’Shell (who was standing in the background) made her way to the front of the stage with bass in tow; sending the audience into a frenzy! With humbleness and a bit of humor, Me’Shell embraced us into her cipher and gave us something that cannot be duplicated. Her musicality went through our souls as she injected her rhythmic flow through her vocals and her incomparable bass.

After the concert, the audience had a Q&A with Me'Shell where she answered questions from what inspires her, who she would like to work with & has worked with and advice to artists of who they wanted to be; do you want to do music or be a star; which is a great question to ponder for any artist doing what they do.

Making Cupcakes @ Butterlane

Before noshing on burgers, bbq chicken, hot dogs, potato salad, etc., SRs Chante spent the July 4th afternoon at Butterlane to learn a thing or two about to make delicious cupcakes like the pros (or close to it).

The kitchen was very "Food Network" ish with everyone donning aprons, using high powered mixers, stacks and stacks of ingredients (salt, powder, sugar, butter milk, etc.), and a witty intructor to take the shyness away from anyone.

We kicked off the class with sweet treats from the folks at Butterlane to show us how these cupcakes that we are about to make should taste like. Next up, a brief lesson on the basic do's and dont's of baking which explains why Chante's cupcakes always ended up chewy and hard (inside and out) lacking the fluffy, light consistency that she was trying so hard to achieve.

The session was invigorating with everyone busy at work mixing, folding, stirring, measuring and blending. There were 108 cupcakes to make so we did break a sweat!!! While the cupcakes were cooling, we learned how to make the frosting and the Jedi-way of properly applying it - Chante scored a coupon for free cupcakes b/c of her awesome skills in this area! (lol) She cannot wait to cash in the coupon and a chance to come back to the East Village -which will be real soon!

Last weekend, the Synch ladies checked out one of our favorite artists, Erick Arc Elliott, at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe performing something old and new (from his latest release "Almost Remembered" which we know you've already downloaded..haha). During his set, the audience ballooned to a mob of fans who clung onto every verse (a beautiful thang!) which was perfect timing for introducing his crew of raw lyricists and childhood friends, the Flatbush Zoombies.

And SR's Chante joined in this past Tuesday's annual city-wide Make Music NY celebration of what else?? MUSIC! She along with a few hundred festival goers clogged 14th Street from 7th Avenue to 10th Avenue as sidewalks and streets were filled with vocalists belting their hearts out, DJ's spinning something yummy for the ears and a New Orleans-inspired processional led by Brooklyn's own Hungry March Band that jammed the Highline. It was crazy - crazy was all good!! And we know the fun meter was to up to the max that day b/c of the other events happening across the city - this is one of those times when a clone was sooooooo needed!

REVIEW: 'Girls Who Rock'... ROCKED the Gramercy!

The Synch Ladies were in attendance this past Friday at The Annual 'Girls Who Rock' Benefit Concert supporting She’s The First hosted by Toure. The New York based concert aims to bring together the strongest voices in technology and entertainment; designed to advocate for girls' education worldwide. The concert was in partnership with the not-for-profit organization She’s the First who sponsors the education of girls in Uganda.

It was an amazing experience to be surrounded by a large diverse crowd coming together for a worthy cause – Education for All! The highlights of the evening included a stirring performance by Seattle born, KimberlyNichole. She kicked off her set with a White Snake hit followed by her own popular song, Disconnected, from her debut release, Yellow Brick Journey, then ended with a powerful rendition of Michael Jackson’s ‘Dirty Diana.’ Another highlight was Minnesota’s Nikki Jean, who educated the crowd on the songwriters of classic hits of yester-year like “My Girl” along with delivering musical gems from her forthcoming release in July. The event’s special guest, Data, convinced us that even robots got soul and can rock out with the ladies. Roboticist, Heather Knight who runs the Marilyn Monroebot, accompanied Data onstage for a comedic routine and dancing that would have made Michael Jackson proud!

In addition to these performers, the crowd was treated to energy packed performances by Eddy, JoJo and Nina Sky. DJ Kiss got the crowd hyped and prepared for the nights' festivities!

Connecting with the new friends and catching up with old on such a glorious evening, we give special shout outs to Anisha Tull of Briclyn Entertainment, and superb vocalists, who backed Miss Kimberly Nicole...Darius Booker (click his name to get a taste of his vocal abilities) and Don 'Day' Kornegay of Day & the Day Show.'

LOVE MUSIC is an attempt to make a record about love. Simple: songs, instrumentals and poems that deal with some of love's variations. Everything we could muster from inspiration and thought. Pieces about romance, God, self discovery, lost, pain, community, death and, of course, lust. I am not going to claim this record explains love but it will be honest and thoughtful.

It was easy to choose a musical direction. I wanted Jonn and I to be immersed in our 90s. During this crazy decade we danced to the soul sampling of Puffy, Bomb Squad and Pete Rock; while head nodding hard to the moods of Portishead, Supreme Beings of Leisure and Tricky. Hence a record spirited by 90s and influenced by an artistic 60s/70s approach. You can call the record...arthouse soul.

There are other websites like KickStart out there that enables artists and art coalitions to galvanize their efforts to raise funds to support their projects from the core mission operations to supporting the release of an upcoming EP. In our current recession, sites like these are a godsend!

A Day In Brooklyn: ATLANTIC AVENUE ARTWALK

The Synch Ladies @ Bacchus Bistrot a Vins
This past Saturday, the Synch Ladies spent the day in downtown Brooklyn for the two day event, Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk; which allows artists and art enthusiasts to share and expose one another to varied expressions; even at discount prices for this special event. From the galleries that opened its doors to the block parties sprouting up as DJs spin the classics to musical performances, there was so much to experience!

Provencale: Mussels in french tomato-herbed sauce @ Bacchus Bistrot a Vins

We popped into a few galleries, shopped for jewels and hand crafted bags, and feasted on delicious French food at Bacchus Bistrot a Vins (we opted for the scrumptious mussels...see picture above) and viewed artwork being created by artists and passerby's at the outdoor exhibits.

For SR's Chantè, who is a Brooklynite, this was an amazing opportunity to see such an improvement of this former desolate area - bringing a bit of Manhattan to downtown Bk. SR's Caprice, from the Bronx, definitely enjoyed the scene and will be back to this area...just because.

After the walk, the Synch ladies decided to catch a movie at BAM; choosing Woody Allen's new film "Midnight in Paris." We realized we were familiar with the film and thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. If you are a fan of Mr. Allen's work or even if you're not a fan, a hopeless romantic and/or a history buff, this flick is a must see!! Go....see...it...now! We love it when artists get creative with their music! From raising $$ via donations from fans (every little bit helps!) using various campaign sites to doing what GLORIA RYANN is doing for her new project - asking us (the fans) which song she should tout at the first single and her first video. She is enlisting her army of supporters to vote on what her single from her forthcoming release should be from three preselected songs - 'Inside My Love', 'What About Me' and 'Wait A Minute'.
